Labour Market

Wiltshire offers a highly skilled workforce, low labour costs and easy access to a wide labour catchment area. It has an entrepreneurial spirit and it is home to some of the nation’s most talented professionals.

According to the Office of National Statistics (ONS), 60.6% of the working age population in Wiltshire is qualified at NVQ level 3 and above, compared to 52.7% in UK and 56.7% in the South West of England.

Neighbouring universities such as Bath, Bath Spa, Bristol, West of England, Bournemouth and Southampton offer a range of business, science, arts and engineering courses. Wiltshire College’s Wiltshire Enterprise provides focused workforce development schemes and training programmes that aim to meet employer needs and support investors.

Wiltshire is also very competitive regarding labour costs, with gross weekly pay average for all full time workers considerably lower than other UK areas:

Due to its strategic location and excellent transport links, the SWLEP area also benefits from being part of a wider labour market catchment area, including Bristol, Bath, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire in the north, Somerset to the west, and Dorset, Southampton and the Solent in the south. This catchment area has an economically active population of almost 4.5m people, 59% of which are qualified to NVQ level 3 and above, providing a highly skilled workforce for businesses.

Wiltshire’s superb quality of life, excellent schools and housing provision and a varied leisure and entertainment offer also contribute to attracting and retaining a higher level of workforce in the county.
