Sparkling wine producer Henkell & Co has taken a 60 per cent stake in Wiltshire-based wine importer Copestick Murray.
Henkell & Co, which is headquartered in Germany and also has a UK distribution company based in Leeds, has acquired the stake for an undisclosed sum.
The business said it aims to develop Mionetto as a leading Prosecco brand in the UK as part of the new venture.
Robin Copestick, director and co-founder of Marlborough-based Copestick Murray, said: “The partnership with Henkell is a perfect fit for our company. Their speciality in making sparkling wines all over Europe is very exciting for us.
“Sparkling wine is a growth category in the UK and up until now we were under represented in this area. Additionally the financial backing from The Henkell & Co. Group will allow us to continue our remarkable growth. We are all very excited about this fantastic opportunity.”
Dr Andreas Brokemper, chief executive of Henkell & Co. Group, added: “The UK is the largest market for Prosecco Spumante (DOC) outside of Italy and one of the fastest growing markets for Prosecco overall. The Mionetto brand gives us a leading Italian Prosecco brand with a long history and superlative quality.
“In the US we have played an important role in shaping and creating the Prosecco trend and we are now the market leader. We are fully confident that the Copestick Murray team, together with our own sales organisation, will establish the Mionetto brand in the UK as well.”
Copestick Murray was founded in 2005 by Robin Copestick and Paul Murray. Its portfolio includes the ‘I heart’ wine brand.
