Wiltshire College Trowbridge has successfully secured a second College Estate Renewal Grant from the Skills Funding Agency to further develop the Trowbridge campus with the addition of a new Construction Skills Centre to meet the growing needs of local employers and the community for courses and Apprenticeships.

The project will be the second phase of building works for the Trowbridge campus. This year new plumbing, electrical and performing arts workshops have already been completed on the site, together with a refurbished gym and student common room. A new entrance, Student Support area and Learning Resource Centre will open in the Spring of next year.

“These exciting new developments on the Trowbridge campus will enable the College to ensure it will be able to respond to and meet the training needs of our local industries and community in the future” said Di Dale, Principal and Chief Executive of Wiltshire College.

The £3.6m Grant will be used to create a new Construction Skills Centre on the Trowbridge campus for trades such as Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry and Brickwork, will provide students with state of the art facilities.

“It really is fantastic news for the Trowbridge campus. The new 2303 square metre, two storey building will replace two buildings- Cheverill and Dilton, and enable us to provide first class new facilities for teaching the construction trades for the future. We will be able to increase the range of skills offered on the Trowbridge campus including the introduction of Painting and Decorating courses and a Gas Training Centre. The new skills centre will improve integration of workshops, increase usable space, improve supervision and provide a more attractive environment for students, professional clients and employers as well as significantly improving the learner experience. The demolition of the existing construction workshops will enable the site to be reconfigured to improve access, traffic flow and security,” said Di Dale, Principal of Wiltshire College.

The new Construction Skills Centre will include:

• 3 Plumbing workshops

• 3 Brick workshops

• 2 Wood Occupations workshops

• 1 Carpentry machine shop

• 2 Electro-technical workshops

• 1 Gas assessment centre

• 1 Gas training facility

• 1 Multi-skills workshop

• 1 Painting and Decorating workshop

• 2 classrooms

• 1 IT classroom

The new building will be located behind existing buildings on what is currently a parking area for students and staff. New parking areas will be created by the demolition of the Cheverill and Dilton building.

Final designs for the new building are currently being developed. It is anticipated that subject to planning, the building work will start next summer and it will be ready for the start of term in September 2014.
