Avon Dairy Solutions, which produces rubber liners and tubing for the dairy industry, has received orders worth £300,000 at its first trade exhibition in China. The business now has a three-year blueprint to expand into China, India and Brazil with assistance from UKTI. The company has employed Chinese staff who understand the local market and expects to reach £1m in sales in China by the end of the year. Avon Dairy Solutions managing director Paul McDonald said: “We had a difficult start in China in 2004, with a number of problems related to a local distributor, payment exposure and the physical distribution of goods, which led to dairy farmers in Inner Mongolia experiencing difficulties with the supply of our products. “We realised we could not give up on China, learnt from our mistakes and with help and guidance from UKTI and the China Britain Business Council established our own sales, distribution and supply centre (FICE) in Shanghai this year.” Andrew Fraser, UKTI International Trade Advisor, said: “Avon is a superb example of a company that is doing all the right things to get into crucial emerging markets. “Companies can benefit from the advice and expertise of experienced UKTI teams who can point out the pitfalls of doing business in certain markets and help plan a way ahead to tackle the challenges.” Avon Dairy Solutions is a trading entity of Avon Rubber which has a turnover of £100m. It employs 250 members of staff in Wiltshire and a further 500 in the USA.
