In 2009 the GVA contribution of the environmental sector to the Wiltshire economy was £96 million, with around 700 businesses employing approximately 2,300 people.
Based in Box, Environ is an international company providing consultancy on environmental and human health issues, assessing and mitigating potential environmental risks.
Another international company based in Wiltshire is SAICA Natur UK, the Spanish provider of recycling and waste management services. It is joined by Huber Technology, one of the worldwide leading suppliers in the field of wastewater/sludge treatment and process engineering.
Wiltshire has seen great growth in the renewable energy sector, and strategic opportunities exist especially within the biomass and waste to energy sectors. Out of all the county areas in the south west of England, Wiltshire saw the greatest percentage increase in biomass in 2010/2011.
Some of key projects in the area include: in the renewable energy sector, Good Energy, based in Chippenham, is a dedicated 100% renewable electricity supplier, supporting almost 2,000 independent generators spread across the country. Also based near Chippenham, Vertdegree designs, installs and manages renewable heating products for the domestic, commercial and industrial sectors.
